While my heart & hands are most often found attending home births, I also recognize that for many families, a hospital birth is the right choice. For those seeking the reassurance of skilled support before heading to the hospital & a familiar presence once you’re there, I offer a small number of monitrice doula services each year.
This special offering blends the nurturing, grounding support of a doula with the clinical experience of a Licensed Midwife, creating continuity & calm as you move through labor & into parenthood.
A monitrice doula offers something unique: the emotional & physical support of a doula, plus the ability to monitor you & your baby during early labor as a Licensed Midwife. It is a beautiful in-between option for families planning a hospital birth but wanting that extra layer of personalized care.
-Monitor your baby’s heartbeat with a fetal doppler
-Check your vital signs (blood pressure, pulse temperature)
-Offer cervical exams to assess dilation
-Evaluating for rupture of membranes (water breaking)
-Helping determine the optimal time to head to the hospital
Once we’re on our way, I continue to stay by your side offering calming presence, comfort measures, advocacy, & guidance until your baby is born into your arms & you’ve had the time to bond as a new family.
Monitrice support may be a beautiful fit for families who:
-Want to labor at home with guidance before going to the hospital
-Hope to avoid unnecessary interventions or early admission
-Are preparing for a VBAC/TOLAC (Vaginal birth after cesarean/trial of labor after cesarean) & want extra insight & support
-Feel more comfortable with someone monitoring both mama & baby at home
-Desire familiarity & trust with the person supporting them throughout labor
-Value the blend of clinical care & emotional nurturing
-Desire to remain home until active labor with the goal of avoiding unnecessary interventions
As your monitrice doula, I’ll walk with you every step of the way:
-We’ll meet prenatally, developing a relationship & preparing for your birth
-Create a customized birth plan specific to you & your hopes, plans, & preferences
-Be available for questions & concerns in between visits
-Once labor begins, I’ll be available to support you remotely–answering questions, offering reassurance, & helping you tune into your body’s rhythms
-When the time feels right, we’ll decide together when I should come to your home to assess & support you in person
-Offer evidence-based guidance, comfort measures, position suggestions, & emotional presence
-Accompany you to the hospital & remain with you until your baby is born
-Stay until you are comfortable, stable, & ready for quiet bonding time
-Offer optional vetted-for prenatal & postpartum referrals, as needed
Because this level of care is so personal & hands-on, I only take a handful of monitrice doula clients each year. This allows me to offer truly individualized support & remain fully present for each family.
If you’re planning a hospital birth but long for the kind of steady, holistic support that feels like coming home, I’d love to walk this journey with you.
Evidence-Based Care, Rooted in Compassion
Choosing a monitrice doula means choosing both heart & expertise. The combination of continuous emotional support & clinical monitoring has been shown to significantly improve outcomes for birthing families.
- 39% lower risk of cesarean birth
- Shorter labors & increased spontaneous vaginal births
- Reduced need for Pitocin and pain medications
- Higher Apgar scores for babies
- Fewer hospital admissions during pregnancy
- Lower rates of postpartum depression and anxiety
- Greater satisfaction with the birth experience
• A Cochrane Review of 26 randomized trials found that people receiving continuous labor support were
significantly more likely to have spontaneous vaginal births, less likely to need interventions, and reported higher satisfaction overall.

• A Medicaid cohort study across three U.S. states showed that when doula care was paired with clinical
support (like midwifery), families experienced fewer cesareans, fewer prenatal hospitalizations, and reduced
postpartum anxiety and depression.
